about

In 1947, a young woman named Evelyn McHale jumped off the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building. She fell to her death, landing on a parked car. The famous photograph depicting the moment, originally captured by Robert Wiles, is the inspiration for this song. Eighty-Six explores the moments leading up to and surrounding this iconic death.

lyrics

I left a note
So I could share final thoughts caught in my throat
And shed my coat

I checked my breath
On the balustrades of the observation deck
And faded to a speck

I’ve broken every last defense
The barricades and parapets
The screaming wind, and the sound of static
Will anchor me down to the traffic

(Chorus)
And the crowds, they will bow to me
The distance between the ground and the eighty-sixth balcony
Hear the sound, they will sing for me
And guide me down to the waiting arms of the limousine

I left my scarf
Hanging on the railing in the dark
One more way to make my mark

Will passersby,
Gape in disbelief or check the time?
Rehearse their alibis…

Will the chrome caress me, stretch to catch me?
Compose my final place of resting?
Contorted metal sheets collapse
Like the shimmer of my last synapse…

(Chorus)
And the crowds, they will bow to me
The distance between the ground and the eighty-sixth balcony
Hear the sound, they will sing for me
And guide me down to the waiting arms of the limousine

I’m eighty-sixed, my name is nixed
I saw their faces all transfixed
On the commonplace insomniac
Here laid to rest upon this Cadillac

(Chorus)
And the crowds, they will bow to me
The distance between the ground and the eighty-sixth balcony
Hear the sound, they will sing for me
And guide me down to the waiting arms of the limousine

The Foxtrap Compromise Williamsburg, Virginia

We are The Foxtrap Compromise. The smell of sawdust and coffee on a cool autumn morning. The awakening spray of saltwater, standing on cliffs facing the ocean. We write stories and sing them as songs. Songs concerning such things as motion, the end of the world, and lighthouses.

Indulge your ears.
